Whether moving across town or across the country, moving is often more expensive than most people realize.  Here are some money-saving tips:

  1. Map out a budget before you pack a single box.

  2. Decide whether you'll haul things yourself or to hire a moving company.  Depending on when and where you'll be moving (in addition to how much you'll be moving), hiring a moving company can cost anywhere between $800 to $4000.

  3. If you decide to hire a moving company, be sure to negotiate a good price.  Find out about any extra fees.  If your schedule allows, see if rates are reduced during the off-peak season.   Movers are their busiest mid-May through mid-September, but are looking for work in January and February.

  4. If you decide to move yourself but need to rent a truck, check out what size you'll need, whether you'll need additional insurance, and what additional equipment, if any, you'll need to rent.

  5. Look into saving some cash when it comes to packing supplies.  Go to UsedCardboardBoxes.com to find discounted factory misprints and overruns.  The company rescues quality used and new cardboard boxes that would otherwise be discarded and delivers them to you in two days.  You pocket the up to 30 percent savings over the cost of purchasing new moving boxes.

  6. Deduct what you can.  Some moving expenses can be deducted on your tax return as long as you qualify.  Be sure to keep all your receipts.
